BSc (Hons) Electrical / Electronic Engineering

Programme Description

The emphasis throughout the course is student centred, task orientated and learning with plenty of scope for practical assignment work. Wherever possible the major individual projects, which are carried out in the second year, are to be industrially based with full involvement of industrial supervisors.

This is a well-established, two / three year, part-time course, (following a HND or HNC) that provides a thorough grounding in all aspects of electrical and electronic engineering and combines the hardware and software subject areas demanded by the industry. Graduates will be prepared for practice as incorporated engineers and the award will provide the learners with a sound basis for continuing education. This award is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Programme Content

Year 1 modules : Control Engineering, Power and Machines, Signals and Digital Communications, Virtual Instrumentation and Control Systems, Networking Systems for Engineers.

Year 2 modules : Electronic Design, Power Electronics and Drives, Electronic Production and Test.

Year 3 modules : Engineering Management and Major Project.

HND students who have covered the year 1 modules will be allowed direct entry into year 2.

Progression & Employment

Successful candidates will be able to perform technical duties in posts demanding a detailed understanding of electrical and electronic engineering. They should be able to design, develop, manufacture, maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology at a high level. They will be prepared for practice as incorporated engineers and will also have the required knowledge and skills for continuing education.

Method of Assessment

Examination and up to four pieces of coursework for non-project modules. Oral presentation and project report for the project module.

Entry Requirements

HNC Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Additional Costs

Higher education fees apply and any additional costs are determined annually by the college.

The learner will also be required to provide their own stationery and basic classroom equipment appropriate to their course (eg, pens and a calculator).
