This level 3 learning area programme is designed to equip individuals with the practical skills, knowledge and understanding required for success in current employment and progression to future employment in a range of manufacturing occupations including: design, planning, drafting, machining, semiconductor processing and production engineering covering mechanical and multi-skilling requirements of the manufacturing engineering industry.
The programme follows an EAL Technical Extended Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology with 149 credits.

The Technical Extended Diploma will focus on the practical application of knowledge and the development of the work related skills required for employment within the manufacturing engineering industry. It will provide a common core of study with related specialist units leading to employment, professional or academic progression to higher education.
This qualification programme provides access to more specialist units and therefore broadens and deepens the learners experience in preparation for the world of work.
Develops a range of skills and knowledge, personal qualities and attitudes that are essential for career development and progression within the broad engineering industry and related sectors. They also provide learners with the necessary knowledge and skills concerning health, safety and welfare, the environment and sustainability, as it impacts on and affects the manufacturing engineering sector.
Provides the opportunity to specialise in a specific career discipline, or to choose an integrated programme of further study.
First year units include Engineering and Environmental Health & Safety, Mechanical Engineering Principles, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Design Process and Engineering Communications.
In year two, the following units are covered: Further Engineering Mathematics, Further Engineering Science, CAD Techniques, Maintenance of Mechanical Systems, Advanced CNC, PLCs, Electrical & Electronic Principles, Advanced Manufacturing Techniques and Project.
Progression & Employment
Students who successfully complete the course may progress to HND or degree courses in related subjects. Jobs directly related to manufacturing engineering include research design and development, manufacturing, production engineering, production planning and quality assurance. Other careers where the skills developed through manufacturing engineering might be useful would include technical sales and marketing, teaching or patent work.
Method of Assessment
All units are assessed via exams, tests, assignments and practical activities.
Normally students 16-19 years of age will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs grade A* - C, including Mathematics and English/Welsh first language. Entry for mature students without these formal qualifications is at the discretion of the faculty.
All engineering full-time courses which include mechanical, electrical/electronic/fabrication and welding and motor vehicle, are fully funded.
The learner will also be required to provide their own stationery and basic classroom equipment appropriate to their course (eg pens and a calculator
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
