A Level 3 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing is a work based learning programme where the learner is earning while learning. The programme is aimed at learners over the age of 16.

At this level, apprentices gain valuable on-the-job experience to become competent within hair or beauty while also studying towards a nationally recognised qualification at NVQ level 3 (equivalent to five 5 GCSEs and two A levels).

Training is focused on more advanced hairdressing techniques and salon practices to become a senior stylist.

This qualification is suitable for those more experienced hairdressers or those who have completed the Level 2 Apprenticeship.

The apprentice will be employed and receive at least the national minimum apprenticeship wage (this could be more at the employer's discretion). The apprentice will attend college on a day release basis and should achieve the level three apprenticeship framework within the agreed timescale.

This level three vocational qualification is designed to further develop your hairdressing skills and techniques which you gained at level two.

Programme Features

All learners will be supported by a training adviser/assessor who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis.

Regular reviews with training advisor.

The training adviser/assessor will liaise closely with the employer to ensure that qualifications are achieved within timescale.

The training adviser/assessor will assess the apprentice in the workplace as and when required.

Programme content

This course consists of mandatory and optional units delivered.

  • Creatively style and dress hair.
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair.
  • Develop, enhance and evaluate your creative hairdressing skills.

Alongside your main qualification, you will be given the opportunity to improve your grades by either taking GCSE resits or Essential Skills in both literacy and numeracy, which will enable you to progress on to further courses and develop your confidence and career opportunities.

Progression and employment

After successfully completing the course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to progress into employment within a salon or explore self-employment.

After completion, a level three qualification you may even wish to apply for working on cruise ships - carrying out hair treatments alongside traveling the world. There are also other exciting opportunities to work in various salon chains across the world within countries as far as Dubai and Bermuda.

  • Practical examination
  • Continuous assessments
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Written assessments
Entry requirements

Minimum entry - NVQ/ VRQ Level 2 hairdressing or previous experience and ability to run a busy client base allong with appropriate personal presentation and personal hygiene are essential.

Practical, organisational and social skills with a high degree of dexterity and coordination are also essential.
