Programme Description


The Engineering Apprenticeship has a number of options, including, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, Multiskilling, Toolroom, Design, Technical and Fabrication & Welding.

An Apprenticeship is a work based learning programme at level three where the learner is “earning while learning”. The programme is ideally suited to employees who have some element of responsibility within their job role. The Apprentice will be employed and receive at least the minimum apprenticeship wage, attending college on a day release basis.

Unemployed applicants will be directed to further education training courses to help prepare them for an apprenticeship, until they find employment and are offered an apprentice place.

  It will take between 18 and 36 months to complete the Apprenticeship framework depending on ability and prior experience.

Programme Features


All learners will be supported by a Training Adviser / Assessor who will visit the work place on a regular basis to monitor progress towards achieving targets.

The Training Adviser / Assessor will liaise closely with the employer and teaching team to ensure qualifications are achieved within agreed timescales.

The apprentice will follow a NVQ in the work place which will be assessed by the Training Adviser / Assessor.

Programme Content


Learners following this apprenticeship will have to achieve a framework of qualifications which will include:

  • Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering (work based)
  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies (college based)
  • Essential Skills Wales level 2 Application of Number*
  • Essential Skills Wales level 2 Communication*
  • Essential Skills Wales level 2 Digital Literacy

*Proxies are available for those with a C or above in GCSE Maths and English

Progression & Employment


Apprentices are already employed but could progress to the HNC and degree apprenticeship.

Method of Assessment


The programme is continually assessed with coursework, tests, assignments, practical observations and work based evidence.

Entry Requirements


Candidates must have at least four GCSEs at grade C or above and include Mathematics and Welsh First Language or English.

Additional Costs


Apprenticeship programmes are fully funded.
