Take your first steps onto a pathway that will give you an insight into both the business and tourism industries.

This course is ideal for students who want to develop their confidence and a wide range of transferable skills. It aims to nurture and support skills development in readiness for further study.

Many learners progress to a level two programme in business, travel and tourism or hospitality and others may choose alternative further study pathways or employment.

You will engage in theoretical and practical tasks which will lead to opportunities in developing a range of personal skills and techniques, essential for successful performance in working life.

Programme Features

This course has been designed to form close links with local businesses and the tourism industry. You will gain a realistic view of the demands of working in the business and tourism sector in a stimulating and exciting environment.

You will have the opportunity to explore industries through trips to businesses and visitor attractions.

Students will also be able to put theory into practice supporting events in partnership with local businesses and the tourism industry.

Programme content

The core units focus on personal development and include: being organised, working with others, developing a personal progression plan and researching a topic.

Other units cover topics such as customer service, exploring local businesses and visitor attractions, branding and promoting and running an event.

Literacy and numeracy skills are important for all students, so the course also incorporates mandatory study of either GCSE or Essential Skills qualifications depending on GCSE grades.

On completion of their study students will achieve a BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Business.

Progression and employment

The purpose of this course is to develop the transferable skills, attributes and behaviours needed for learners to progress to further study.  This progression can take many routes such as to a level two programme, other study routes or an apprenticeship, leading ultimately to employment.

Progression opportunities are subject to interview and depend on the students’ achievements at Level 1.  There is an expectation that to progress, learners complete the course with a merit profile and demonstrate progression in literacy, numeracy and digital literacy.

All students are considered for entry onto the course following a successful interview and tutor reference.

Method of assessment

Units are assessed internally using centre devised assignments.

These assessment methods can include observation in work related situations, presentations, projects, role play, interviews or extended writing.

This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of English only.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of two GCSE grades at grades D-G to study this course. Those without formal qualifications will be considered following an interview and entry test.

Additional costs

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
