Engage in a course that will introduce you to the public services sector.
This one-year course is designed to introduce you to the knowledge and skills needed to pursue an education and/or career in the public services sector. It aims to nurture attributes and behaviours in readiness for further study. Upon completion, you may decide to use this course as a stepping-stone to L2 Public Services or L2 Sport.
You will have the opportunity to engage in practice-based activities and subject specific theoretical study, alongside developing essential skills such as literacy, numeracy and digital literacy. The course will provide you with an opportunity to explore essential skills needed for a successful career in the Public Services, which include teamwork, communication, health and fitness and problem solving.
You will have access to industry standard facilities and equipment such as our sports hall and fitness suite. You are also encouraged to engage in our Sports Academies that aim to develop athletes and players in a range of sports.
Areas of study include volunteering, health and fitness, expedition skills and map reading. You will also develop skills in organisation, personal progression planning and research at an appropriate level.
You are invited to engage with the local community and foster positive relationships with industry specialists to gain an insight into potential career options. These opportunities aim to improve confidence and develop aspirations.
This course provides an insight into the public services industry and encourages learners to progress further in order to achieve their career aims. Successful completion of the course will allow students to progress onto alternative L1 courses or L2 courses within the curriculum area.
Progression opportunities depend on the students achievements at L1. It is an expectation that learners complete with a full pass profile and demonstrate progress in literacy, numeracy and digital literacy. Progress in subject to interview.

Responding to an Incident
Finding Out About the Public Services
Taking Part in Fitness Testing
Carrying Out Security Searches
Taking Part in Sport and Adventurous Activities
Planning and Navigating a Route
The course also includes skill develop sessions and a tutorial programme.
All assignments are devised by the course tutors, and assessed internally.
To pass an internally assessed unit, students must meet all the assessment criteria.
You will require a minimum of 4 GCSE’s at grade D-G. All students are assessed on an individual basis and will be offered the opportunity to attend an interview
English and Maths are an integral part of the course. Students who do not yet have the necessary grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE, Agored Qualifications or Essential Skills depending on prior GCSE grades.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £45 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
