Advanced Level Skills Challenge Certificate

Programme Description

The Skills Challenge Certificate (SCC) is an A Level equivalent course, graded A* - E and studied alongside many level 3 vocational courses and all AS and A2 courses. It has the same UCAS points as a full A-Level and is designed to develop and progress learners' skills in Literacy; Numeracy; Digital Literacy; Personal Effectiveness; Planning and Organisation; Critical Thinking; Creativity and Innovation and Problem Solving.

The emphasis in the SCC is on applied learning around the concept of ‘plan, do, and review’. You will acquire and apply a range of transferable skills in different contexts which will include planning activities, carrying out activities, reviewing outcomes and your own development.

The SCC has been designed to include learning which will enthuse, engage and motivate learners.

Programme Features

The SCC will provide experiences which support your other subjects and which will enable you to be better prepared for your future destination.  With the support of an experienced SCC tutor, you will be guided through each of the Challenges.

Another key element of the SCC is the Individual Project: giving learners the opportunity to carry-out independent research into their area of interested study or aspirational career. Learners will develop research and referencing skills; structuring a 'mini-dissertation' and presenting a critical piece of academic writing. Importantly, you will learn skills that you will need and use in university and life.

Progression & Employment

Successful completion of the course will enable learners to progress to higher-level courses, such as degree programmes.

The course also provides a broad set of skills which can lead to successful employment.  In particular, the Project is invaluable for helping to structure university applications and in being able to speak confidently at interviews. It demonstrates an interest, knowledge and understanding of complex issues in a chosen area of study, and gives learners a competitive edge, demonstrating resilience, commitment and interest in a subject of choice and assisted a number of our learners to secure a reduced offer through UCAS.

Programme Content

The Skills Challenge Certificate consists of 4 components in total:

Individual Project - 50%

Enterprise and Employability – 20%

The 3 Challenges are completed under controlled conditions over a specified time period, following a period of teaching and learning.  The Individual Project can be completed outside of the classroom and feedback can be given by assessors.
