National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching & Development Level 3

Programme Description


The sport sector is a fast-growing industry. It is currently worth £39 billion to the economy and continues to grow annually. Sports coaching and development is currently one of the most important areas of this industry, ensuring that health and skill development occur from grassroots to elite levels of performance.

This course is ideal for learners who wish to work within sports coaching, development or the sports education sector. As a student on the course you will have access to industry standard facilities and equipment such as our 4G pitch, sports hall, fitness gym, analysis suite and performance hub. You will gain first-hand experience with our ‘Gold Standard’ equipment, boasting Peak Power Wattbikes, Body Mass Analyser, Smartspeed sensors and breath-by-breath VO2max analysis.  You will also have the opportunity to engage in our Sports Academies that aim to develop athletes and players in a range of sports.

Students will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course, completing a L3 National Foundation in Sports Coaching and Development in Year 1 and progressing onto L3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development in Year 2.

Programme Features


This suite of qualifications includes embedded industry accreditation, allowing learners to progress directly into employment within the sports sector.

Learners will gain knowledge in areas such as advanced coaching techniques, sports nutrition, sports analysis, fitness assessment, sports massage and anatomy and physiology.

Alongside your core qualification you will also develop essential skills such as numeracy, literacy and digital literacy skills via our online Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST).

Programme Content


The 12 units course combines theory with practical methods of learning. 1080 GLH is equivalent in size to three A Levels.

Year 1:
  • Unit A: Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry
  • Unit B: Health, Wellbeing and Sport
  • Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills
  • Unit 1: Sport Development
  • Unit 2: Self-employment in Sport and Physical Activity
  • Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
Year 2:
  • Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills
  • Unit E: Research Project in Sport
  • Unit 4: Nutrition for Physical Performance
  • Unit 7: Functional Sports Massage
  • Unit 8: Fitness Testing
  • Unit 12: Practical Sports Application

Progression & Employment


Successful completion of the course can lead to opportunities within the sport, leisure and health sector including employment in leisure centres, fitness gyms, school hwb sports officers, local community coaching departments and governing bodies.

This course will also enable students to progress to higher education courses at university in areas such as; Sports Coaching and Performance, Sports Therapy, Sports Nutrition, Strength and Conditioning, Physical Education and/or Sports Psychology to name a few.

Method of Assessment


All work is assessed internally via written assignments, practical assessments, presentations, logbooks, use of video evidence, open book tests, leaflets/brochures, etc. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction, with an overall triple grade e.g. PPP to D*D*D* awarded on completion.

Entry Requirements


A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 including either English Language or Welsh (1st Language) and Maths. GCSE Physical Education is beneficial, but not essential.

Progressions from Level 2 Sport with MM profile are accepted. Having a strong interest and active involvement in sport is also beneficial. All learners are assessed on an individual basis via an interview.

Additional Costs


All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £45 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and purchase the college sports kit to use in practical activities and college trips.
