Programme Description

Sport is one of the most dynamic areas of Coleg Sir Gâr. We are proud to offer exciting, innovative degree programmes in sport, football and rugby. All our sport courses are validated by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

All of the courses have excellent completion rates, attainment rates and strong links with industry, which ensure that all our students have the best guidance and opportunities to achieve their desired goals. Our highly-qualified sport staff maintain effective training and development ensuring that their teaching is both relevant and current.

The BSc in Sports Coaching and Performance is a practice-based programme to prepare you for a career in the sports industry. This programme is designed to ensure a current and academically rigorous learning experience that meets the needs of local industry. The programme has strong links with elite professional teams such as The Scarlets and Swansea City FC, where students have the opportunity to gain industry experience at the highest level. The degree also benefits from community links built up within the department over many years, placing students in local schools with local sports development officers which provide an insight into potential employment routes.

Programme Features

Areas of study include High Performance Sports Coaching, Contemporary Issues in Sports Coaching and Performance, Observation and Analysis of Sports Coaching and Performance and Strength and Conditioning. You will also develop transferable interpersonal skills such as advanced research skills, problem solving, autonomous learning and critical thinking skills in preparation for a career in sport.

The area benefits from excellent facilities including a state of the art sports laboratory (fully equipped with the latest industry standard testing equipment and software), analysis suite and new all-weather 3G surface. To add to this the college has invested in a new indoor sports facility, complete with full size sports hall as well as a strength and conditioning gym.

Diet, Injury and Rehabilitation

Progression & Employment

This course aims to prepare you for progression into a career in sport and physical education. Potential career pathways may include Sports Administrator, Rugby Coach/Instructor, Rugby Development Officer, Sports Analyst, Strength and Conditioning Coach, PE Teacher or College Lecturer.

Alternative career pathways may include the emergency services, armed services, sales and youth work.

Method of Assessment

Modules are assessed through a combination of assignments, case studies, logbooks and practical skills assessments. More theoretical modules will be assessed through formal examinations, assignments, case studies and project work.
