During Apprenticeship week, we celebrate the success of some of our excellent apprentices. 

Dylan Evans, a former Ysgol Bro Myrddin pupil is employed with Bullock Brothers, Llandovery after completing his electrical apprenticeship at Coleg Sir Gâr and Cyfle Building Skills.  Dylan is a fine example that an apprenticeship can be key to a successful career at any time of life.

While building his own house, Dylan took on some of the construction work himself to save money and enjoyed the work so much he went back to college to train as an electrician.

Dylan Evans said: “I’ve always enjoyed working, but I was stuck in a rut as a lorry driver and I didn’t realise how much I missed doing something I loved until I started work on my house.

“I came to my apprenticeship later than most, but going back to college in my 30s was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

“The wage I earn while working towards my apprenticeship is enough to help keep things ticking over and I’m already earning more now in my final year than I did as a lorry driver.”

Dylan, who previously served in the British Army has been an inspirational electrical apprentice who has displayed commitment, passion, drive and enthusiasm throughout his time on the programme, which has resulted in him achieving his level two and three electrical qualifications. He has also taken part in a construction project in Serbia as part of his training.

Dylan is extremely well driven, with excellent practical skills and knowledge.  He has always been heavily involved in promoting Apprenticeship Week by attending careers events and also going into local schools and giving inspirational talks to young children on a career within the construction industry.

Apprenticeships play an important role in increasing Wales’ overall skill set and driving economic growth, making sure that the nation remains competitive on the world stage. Apprenticeships are a worthwhile investment for employers who can train their workforce in the specialist skills they need to sustain and grow their businesses.

As a result of Dylan’s continued 100 percent commitment on the apprenticeship programme, he was successful in achieving the Trade Apprentice of the Year with G4C Construction Excellence Awards last October.
