Student Finance
Further Education (FE) Finance
There is a range of potential funding which you may be able to apply for as a further education (FE) student. You will find plenty of information on the Student Finance Wales website by accessing this link:
https://www.studentfinancewales.co.uk/fe.aspx
Here you will get the details of eligibility and how to apply for both Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) if you are aged 16-18 and the Welsh Government Learning Grant (WGLG) if you are aged 19 or over.
We also have another source of funding to help with specific costs such as course equipment, childcare and travel. You can apply for the Financial Contingency Fund (FCF) via your Wellbeing Officer on campus.
Higher Education (HE) Finance
Funding for higher education degree courses might sound a little overwhelming when you first look into it but there is plenty of material available and support from us to guide you through it.
One key message is that you don’t have to pay any fees up front if you prefer not to.
Unlike further education when you are only able to apply for grants, you will probably be able to access loans as well on a higher education programme.
Remember that you only pay back the loans, not the grants and bursaries. The information below should be able to give you some simple guidance before you start looking into it in more detail.
Full Time Funding
Tuition Fees
The fee for a full time college course this year is £9,000. However, you can get a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the full amount for the course fee. This is paid directly to the college on your behalf by Student Finance Wales. You are not likely to get this support if you already have a full degree and we would recommend you call Student Finance Wales to confirm this.
Living Costs
There are also loans and grants available to help you with living costs. The amount of Maintenance Loan and Welsh Government Learning Grant you can get depends on your household income but these are paid directly to your bank account in three instalments, once every term. Scroll down to bottom of page to view the chart.
Extra Help
You might be able to get extra help if you have a disability, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty, or if you have children or an adult who depends on you financially. You can also get help with your childcare fees if you incur costs for when you are in college.
Repayments
You have to repay any Maintenance Loan or Tuition Fee Loan you borrow from Student Finance Wales, but not until you have finished your course and your income is over £26,000 a year. Repayments will be taken off your salary and the amount you repay each month is based on your income, not what you borrowed. As a quick guide, you will pay 9% on what you earn above £26,000.
How to Apply
You will find all the information you need in a lot more detail here: https://www.studentfinancewales.co.uk/
Part Time Funding
Tuition Fees
The tuition fees vary for part-time students and will usually be somewhere in the region of £1506 to £1806. Your course tutor or wellbeing officer should be able to provide you with the exact figure if you are unsure.
Living Costs
As with the tuition fees, the living cost payments for part-time learners are lower, but they work on a similar principle to the full-time system. For more information please visit:
Bursaries
